Jordaan, Amsterdam –
After spending many years as a typical Dutch brown bar on the Rozengracht, Bar Struik was transformed by its owner Remco, with the help of his uber-cool friends, from a staid old tavern into a sleek hangout for a sociable young crowd.
The simple, urban vibe is punctuated by the colorful graffiti that spells out the bar’s name on the red brick wall, while the street art exhibit, which includes everything from skateboard deck creations to stenciling on canvas, changes every three months and features designs by some of the best alternative artists in Amsterdam.
The sofas on the top level provide a funky atmosphere where the chatty clientele of designers, skaters, artists, and other creative types can spend comfy, cool evenings with friends listening to the soul, jazz, and afro beats offered by the DJs.
Outgoing and fun-loving creative types, designers, artists, 18 to mid-30s.
DJs spin hip-hop, soul, afro beat, funk, jazz, indie, and college radio rock. Occasional Urban Karaoke nights on Saturdays.
Lunch menu of simple yet tasty sandwiches, salads, soups, and cheese platters.
Lunch menu €3+. Beer €2+, wine €3+, mixed drinks €6+.
Anything goes.
Thursdays through Saturdays. The bar heats up around 10pm.
The area of the Jordaan right behind Struik offers picture-perfect Amsterdam scenery. Take some time to wander through and enjoy the peaceful canals, quaint streets, and romantic settings.
